Bed bugs are not known to be vectors of disease but their bites can be painful and skin rashes and allergic reactions can develop.

Interestingly, not everyone suffers these reactions and some people can remain completely unaware that they are being bitten. Generally people are surprised to discover that bedbugs weren’t eradicated years ago and are horrified to find them in their home.

Based on experience, we have found that a combination of the heat and traditional chemical treatments are the most effective treatment in eradicating bed bug infestations.

Unlike many pesticides, the heat treatment of bed bugs will penetrate into all of the cracks and crevices and kill bed bugs where they reside. This process will force heat into beds, bedding, mattresses, furniture, electronics, wall cavities, etc. leaving no place for bed bugs to hide. This is important because adult bed bugs have been shown to live up to a year on a single blood meal, and may simply go to a small, dark space away from mattresses to live and reproduce.

The appearance of bed bugs varies somewhat, depending on their stage of development and the length of time since their last blood meal. However a combination of factors including their gregarious habits, characteristic harbourage areas and the distinctive staining of mattresses provides easy identification by trained operators.

Bed bugs are insects belonging to the order Hemitera (half wing).These are the true ’bugs’, all having piercing and sucking mouthparts. Most bugs feed on plants but some are parasites of animals, including bedbugs which have been parasites of humans for thousands of years.

They were thought to have been largely eradicated with the development of pesticides in the 1930s and particularly after the Second World War. They seem to have increased again in prevalence worldwide in the last twenty years or so but it is not clear why. Generally they are associated with the accommodation industry but can easily be transferred on luggage, clothing and furniture and residential homes can also be infested. 

Bedbugs have flat oval shaped bodies with no hind wings. Adults are 4-5 mm long and 2-3 mm wide, light brown – red brown; newly hatched nymphs are translucent.

They are nocturnal and tend to congregate in groups, usually in close vicinity to their host.

They are most often found on mattresses, bed heads and bed frames but any cracks and crevices in bedrooms are likely harbourage areas.
